This was really great. For me it means some people will like my voice, and others won’t. There’s nothing I can do about that…except go where that voice takes me.
Joan Jett is the one I picked. Carrie’s has a great musical hook but eh, you can on,y take a slugger to a car so many times, girl. Guess which one I outright rejected after the first verse? Did you pick Joan Jett too. Picking a break up song is hard (because my go to is musical theatre) but I’m going with Lizzy McAlpine’s “erase me” https://youtu.be/YV9NrQvNEv4?si=KXajD_VXxRX2gweb
"Erase Me" was FIRE!!! Thanks for sharing. Definitely a whole book in that one. Maybe I'll write it!!!
I relate more to Joan as a human, but I can't deny my fondness for that Carrie Underwood song. She paints the scene of her ex in the bar so well - the whole thing just lives in my brain while I'm listening. I'd follow her to the next chapter ... where she's dodging the police who are after her on vandalism charges. 😊 Or burning the guys clothes on her front lawn. Either way, I'm hooked!
I love that Carrie Underwood song because I can picture the whole story. (Been thinking someone should do a “dramatic monologue” for a piece of it) — such strong imagery and voice for sure. The Joan Jett one is great too, for the back and forth of will she/won’t she just leave him already.
Oh and I definitely think Alanis beats Olivia on this (but maybe that’s my GenX talking :) - her voice is literally more believable - she’s been dumped and is pissed about it and I feel it!
I'll admit Olivia's tune is catchier and more "fun" to listen to, but if we're just talking about lyrics, Alanis teases so much good stuff about the relationship in hers. About their wild sex life, and the fact that maybe Alanis was too young to want to start a family and that might have pushed her man away. All great story building. I didn't include this in my post because I didn't want to appear TOO judgy, but my big takeaway from Olivia's portrait of her broken relationship was that she put her boyfriend in therapy. 😂 So, if I wanted to hear from anybody in Chapter Two of that story, it would be the guy who dodged the bullet. 😉
Not that this is what you asked at all, but my favorite Olivia Rodrigo song is Vampire. Maybe that one has capital V-Voice. I don’t know. Does my writing have capital V-Voice?! I Don’t Know, Meg! I’ll go work on my playlist.
"Vampire" is a good one! I actually didn't know that was an O.R. song. Whoops, I might be a secret fan. I'll have to listen to that one again for capital V-vibes.
All writing has capital V-Voice! And it doesn't have to be angry to hook us. It just has to be clear. And like nobody else's. 🥰
But also as far as Olivia Rodrigo goes, I prefer her "Driver's License" and will play on repeat, cranking the volume at the sing-songy part ("Red lights, stop signs...")
Which story do you want to read more of? - Cry Me A River. I actually have both this song and the Carrie Underwood song on my iPod.
What about that submission hooked you? - I think what attracted me was the title. It's a phrase that people say (used to say? Is anyone actually saying this anymore?) in a sarcastic way. In my mind, I feel this submission would have a snarky FMC who gets revenge on the dude who broke up with her.
If you REJECTED all three submissions, why? And … I probably would've rejected the other two because there probably wouldn't have been anything new there. Very cookie cutter.
Which breakup song/story would you have chosen instead? "Irreplaceable" by Beyonce.
Bonus: Which one do you think I picked? 😏 - Joan Jett
Love Beyonce. At some point I'll write about her song "If I were a boy." So good.
I picked Carrie! She really paints a picture. Also, if I was ever forced to do Karaoke, that is 100% the song I'd sing. But Joan's tune's got fire, for sure. 💕

(Good For You is a banger imo)
Right on, H.H. 🥂
Best writing advice I ever received was "Don't fight your voice." It has served me well.
Re: the songs - I'm on Team Alanis for narrative substance. But Olivia wins the earworm award. 👂🏽🪱

See my comment to Leanne. I'm WITH YOU on Carrie's jam.

I choose Carrie :)
Also really enjoying The Romantic.
But also the thought of bashing in some headlights/tear up some upholstery/keying a truck really energizes me...so I may be biased.
I call it Vehicular Castration and I'm a fan.

Oh, that one makes my "inner teen" ache big time.
I did so much "driving by" boys' houses in my day.
There was literally nothing else to do. 😂
Aww. Yay! 🥰

LOL. That's true. What with all the keying and bat swinging she talks about. LOL
